books, sharp objects and Brian Dettmer.

Just found a new art crush: Brian Dettmer.

A book surgeon, carefully carving away pieces of pages, until an insanely amazing discovery is left behind.

"My work is a collaboration with the existing material and its past creators and the completed pieces expose new relationships of the book’s internal elements exactly where they have been since their original conception"
~Brian

In Wonderland

This weekend I head to LA where I will meet up with friend and fellow inkpunk, Andrew Penn-Romine and together we will descend upon the current LACMA show:
In Wonderland; The Surrealist Adventures of Women Artists in Mexico and the United States.*

I'll be doing a more extensive writeup about the show, the artists** and surrealism in general for my Art Nerd column, but meanwhile, I have purchased a brand new sketchbook. Just for this trip. Andy and I intend to spend several hours with pen and paper in front of these pieces, digging deep and finding our own stories. (Inspired by Nancy Hightower.)

After the show, in the tradition of the surrealists, there will be cocktails and rounds of exquisite corpse! A perfect Art Date for my muse. Huzzah!

*An exceptional review of the show by Christopher Knight can be found at the LA Times.

** The images shown here are Frida Kahlo's The Two Friedas, and Helen Lundberg's Double Portrait of the Artist in Time 2.

Published! Monsters and Mormons is now available.

Monsters and Mormons, is now available in print and ebook!

Contained therein is a spectacular line-up of pulp fiction, ghost stories, lovecraftian horrors, space aliens, zombies, post-apocalyptic warfare, food that bites back, demon lovers, mad scientists, etc.

Oh, it also has a graphic novel about some steampunk sister-wife assassins. Yep, Traitors and Tyrants, by John Nakamura Remy and myself, is now in print and keeping good company with a whole lot of other whoop ass and creepy.

So get yourself a copy then settle in for some thrills and chills of what's not vying to be the republican presidential candidate this year.

Keith Thompson (::shuddering::)

Featured today in io9: a shuddering glimpse into the work of Kieth Thompson.
"Thompson's crafted a nightmare fuel gallery of necrotic creatures with pedigrees in both science fiction and fantasy."

Viewed here on the left is Lili, who caught my eye for several reasons, one of them being that it resonated with my own proclivity for truncated limbs, distorted proportions, and multiple mammaries.

More at Kieth Thompson's gallery.

ScapeZine and Tales To Terrify.

A few places where I have been busy lately:

Lauren Dixon has a stunning piece of fiction, Double Dutch, over at ScapeZine (go read it NOW) and I had the privilege of doing the accompanying Illustration:
Also, I grace the current issues of Tales To Terrify:

Currently, I am doing up an illustration for the Bronies anthology, and finishing cover art for Bibliotheca Fantastica.

Keeping busy, and out of trouble.

Mostly.
